When You Were Everything

Cleo and Layla have been best friends for years, but when Layla becomes close to girls in the school’s chorus which she hopes to join, Cleo finds herself feeling left out and somewhat ignored. Hard feelings turn to resentment and Cleo says something to Layla about her stuttering problem, and this seems to damage the friendship beyond repair. Now Cleo has no one to turn to when her parents separate and she finds herself falling for Dominic, a new boy at school who seems to share her love of Shakespeare. Flashing back and forth between the present and the past, Cleo tells the story of how she met her best friend and slowly reveals how their friendship fell apart. This is a well-written, believable novel with a sympathetic main character who many teens will relate to.
