Heartless

Author Marissa Meyer pens an imaginative prequel to Alice in Wonderland in which she portrays Catherine, a noble girl who loves to bake and dreams of starting a bakery with her best friend and servant Mary Ann. Unfortunately, she would have to give up her wealth and title. Her parents will hear none of it and try to pressure her to marry the not-so-very-attractive or eloquent King of Hearts. She finds herself in a desperate situation until the king obtains a new court jester who goes simply by Jest. He's handsome, smart, and full of magic. He also has eyes for Catherine who can't help but fall for him, but Jest is not simply a court jester; he's on a mission and has come through the Looking Glass giving Catherine hope that what seems impossible may become possible after all. Fantasy fans who haven't read the actual book Alice in Wonderland and who don't mind slow pacing and painstaking attention to detail may enjoy this stand-alone novel from the author of The Lunar Chronicles while those looking for romance with a satisfying conclusion would be wise to look elsewhere.
