Simon Snow aka "the chosen one" is about to start his final year of magic school. He's completely inept with a wand, was just dumped by his girlfriend, thinks his roommate Baz could literally be a vampire plotting to kill him, and fears the Humdrum, a magical being who looks like him and is sucking the magic from various locations around the U.K. creating "dead spots". When Baz finally shows up to school after missing the first several weeks of the term, he insists that Simon and his talented best friend Penelope help him discover the truth about what happened to his mother, a former head mistress at the school. Carry On by Rainbow Rowell may appear on the surface as yet another take off of Harry Potter but it is neither a rip off or parody. Instead, it is an inspired adventure brimming with humor and a little bit of romance.
