Zara Hossein has high hopes for going to an Ivy League school and escaping the prejudice of some of her peers in Corpus Christi. When the hate of one of her classmates escalates, her father goes to the boy's father's home to talk to him. Unfortunately, he's shot and accused of trespassing, putting her family's green card status in jeopardy. Zara's family thinks it would be best to go back to Pakistan, but Zara has no memory of her home country and doesn't want to leave her friends. Additionally, she would be classified as an international student, and her parents would not be able to afford the tuition...if she's accepted into one of the limited spots for international students. Zara Hossain is a fast-paced read that highlights the difficulties faced by some immigrants. It's well-written and sure to appeal to those who enjoy realistic fiction, especially if it pertains to social issues.
