We Deserve Monuments

Avery is resentful of being moved by her mother and father from the bustling metropolis of Washington, D.C. to the small country town of Bardell, Georgia for her senior year, but her grandmother, Mama Letty, has terminal cancer, and Avery's mother wants to be "the dutiful daughter" even though she's been estranged from her Mama Letty since Avery was very young. When they arrive in Bardell, Avery finds a judgmental, cantankerous old woman instead of the grandmother she had hoped to bond with, and she also realizes that there are long-buried secrets that need to be uncovered, even as she develops new friendships and a budding romance. We Deserve Monuments is a well-written exploration of injustice and its long-lasting effects on people and their relationships with others.
