Stephen King's classic novel of revenge gets a modern retelling for young adults in The Weight of Blood by award-winning author Tiffany D. Jackson.
Madison Washington has always been teased by the other students at her high school in Springville. She is shy, quiet, and wears outdated clothing, but when she gets caught in the rain during P.E., it becomes apparent from her hair that she's been hiding her true race which makes her an even bigger target, especially for one particular bully. Her anxiety (as well as the feelings she begins to experience for the star football player) are enough to start activating powers she didn't know she had much to the chagrin of her overbearing and protective father. Though Jackson borrows greatly from Carrie, there's plenty of original material in her book to satisfy young adults looking for a more modern rendering of the classic horror novel.
