The Poet X

Xiomara "X" Barista is a budding young poet who wants more than anything to join her school's Spoken Word Club. She writes constantly and fills notebooks with her poetry, writing about her experiences and passions. Those closest to her know she has skills and urge her to join the club. Unfortunately, her mother, a Dominican immigrant, expects X to be a devout Catholic like herself and wants her to attend confirmation classes on Tuesday afternoons which is exactly when the Spoken Word Club meets. Additionally, X isn't allowed to date, and there's a handsome boy who's been flirting with her. Her twin brother is also going through his own troubles, but she feels helpless where he's concerned, and knows that her brother's secrets would most certainly draw the ire of her religiously zealous mother. If you love poetry or stories with plenty of drama, especially mama drama, you will thoroughly enjoy The Poet X, a brilliantly written novel that won the National Book Award, the Printz Award, the Pura Belpré award, the Golden Kite Award, and the Odyssey Award.
