James and his long-time girlfriend Cody are known as Ones, genetically modified humans who were bred to be more intelligent, attractive, and talented. Twenty years have gone by since the government starting allowing parents to apply to have a genetically modified child and there are hundreds of thousands of them, but when ordinary people feel they’ve lost jobs and other opportunities due to their superior counterparts, resentment grows for the Ones and legislation is passed that strips them of their rights and freedom. Despite their situation, James and Cody find themselves at odds when Cody joins an organization headed by a handsome young leader named Kai who believes violence is the only way to win back the rights of the Ones. This first installment in the Ones series by Daniel Sweren-Becker believably explores topics of discrimination, hate, and inequality through realistic characters and fast pacing.
