In The Faithful Spy: Dietrich Bonhoeffer and the Plot to Kill Hitler, author and illustrator John Hendrix strives to make the amazingly true and complex story of pastor-turned-spy Dietrich Bonnhoeffer accessible to a young adult audience. He successfully does this in graphic novel format, using the colors of red, black, and blue-green to contrast between the evil actions of Hitler and the metamorphosis of Bonhoeffer into a pastor who felt it necessary to "sin boldly" for the greater good, even if that meant plotting the assassination of another human being. Sometimes several drawings are framed on a single page. Often, however, a drawing may take up an entire page or two. All of the drawings are artfully-rendered. Sometimes, to great effect, Hendrix uses the image of rats to represent the gestapo as well as a wolf to convey the ferocity of Hitler's lust for power, no matter the cost. Highly recommended for ALL readers!
