Ren Gardner is the granddaughter of the famous Black Witch, Canessa Gardner, considered a war hero to all Gardnerians, but it appears as though none of Ren's grandmother's powers have been passed down to her. Ren decides to become an apothecary and is sent to the University to learn all there is to know about making medicines, but she quickly realizes that her dreams of the University are quite different from reality as she is bullied by a level five mage named Fallon Bane, is forced to room with feared and despised creatures called Icarals, and takes classes with werewolves and Kelts. As she gets to know them, however, she realizes that she has harbored many misconceptions, and she begins to fear for them as Marcus Vogel, who believes only Gardnerians should exist and own the land, becomes more powerful and threatens to become High Mage. Filled with magic and adventure, The Black Witch by Laurie Forest is a highly original novel that is difficult to put down!
