He's hoping he's like his Aunt Libby and his Uncle Darren. He wants their passion, their attitude, and their fangs; that is, he wants to be a werewolf, but it doesn't look like he inherited that gene. So goes the story of our narrator as he reaches puberty and doesn't undergo the long expected change. His aunt and uncle tell him he's probably just a late bloomer and not to give up hope, but as they run from city to city, avoiding the cops, hunters, and other werewolves, he begins to wonder if it will ever happen, and then he discovers the troubling truth of his past. Not your typical horror novel, Mongrels is a complex story of family, identity, and coming of age. If you like your fantasy horror novels with interesting characters, be sure to check out Mongrels from Ray Bradbury winner Seth Graham Jones!
