Shaker Heights is a meticulously planned suburb, from the Norway Maple at the front of each house to the types of house materials that are permitted. Everything is perfect, or at least, it appears that way. One day Mia and her daughter Pearl arrive and rent a duplex from the Richardsons. Mia's little family is quite different from Mrs. Richardson's though. Mia is a photographer and takes odd jobs in order to support herself and her daughter while Mrs. Richardson is a reporter for the local paper and has four teenage children with her husband who happens to be a lawyer. At first Mrs. Richardson feels sorry for Mia and Pearl and takes them under her wing, but when a Chinese infant is left at a firehouse and quickly adopted by friends of the Richardsons, Mia and Mrs. Richardson end up on opposite sides of a fierce debate. Suddenly, Mrs. Richardson feels unnerved by the way in which Mia chooses to live and begins investigating Mia's past to discover what she may be hiding. What she discovers will irrevocably change the lives of both families. Although the beginning is a little dry and too many characters are introduced right away, the author is quick to pick up the momentum. A story of secrets and the complicated relationships of mothers and daughters, bestselling novel Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng is a devastatingly delicious drama!
