Jack is an immortal "lantern" in New England. He's skeletal and carries his spirit around in a pumpkin as he guards a portal to the Otherworld, keeping out creatures such as trolls. Then Ember, a young and powerful witch, wanders in, and he feels protective of her, choosing to watch over her instead of ousting her or turning her over to his boss. When she turns seventeen, Jack realizes that he feels more than just protective of her, especially when a suave vampire named Dev arrives to lure her back into the Otherworld. There, her powers will be invaluable since everything runs on witch energy, but like Jack, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to her beauty and charm. As Ember and Dev enter the Otherworld pursued by Jack, a steampunk adventure ensues with ghosts, more vampires, pirates, a mad scientist, and even the Boogeyman. Fans of Halloween tropes and steampunk who like plenty of description and characterization may enjoy this out-of-this-world novel by Colleen Houck.
