In this shocking nonfiction account of the Reign of Terror (as it's known to the Osage people), author David Grann recounts the killing of at least two dozen members of the Osage Tribe who, because of the rights they had to oil under their reservation land in Oklahoma, were systematically poisoned, shot, and even blown up in an effort to steal their money. The "lawmen" who originally began to investigate were prone to corruption. It was only when Herbert Hoover sent undercover agents from the forerunner of the FBI that a plot by a man (and his relatives) to use guardianships, marriage, and other means to eliminate the Osage and take their wealth was uncovered. Although the FBI solved two dozen murder cases, David Grann demonstrates that there were many more suspicious deaths, but they were never investigated. This is an engaging book that both true crime fans and history buffs will find difficult to put down!
