In this atmospheric thriller, Jane North-Robinson moves from beautiful California with her mother Ruth to the family's ancestral home in Maine. Jane is still reeling from the loss of her father and the discovery that they are broke, but she tries to stay strong for her mother. What they discover in Maine is a dilapidated manor with roses thriving outside even though it's terribly cold. Jane is disturbed by the noises she hears in the spacious old house, but her mom assures her that the house is just "settling", but when she finds out someone died at the house, and a girl at her new school bullies her for no good reason, she's convinced that there's more to the house and its history than her mother is telling her. Horrid is a creepy, suspenseful read that's tough to put down!
