His Hideous Heart is a collection of thirteen tales by popular young adult authors based on works by Edgar Allan Poe. For instance, mystery writer Lamar Giles presents "The Oval Filter" based on Poe's "The Oval Portrait", but in Lamar's version, a football player sees his dead girlfriend on Instagram and realizes she wants him to know the terrible truth about her death, hoping for revenge. In "She Rode a Horse of Fire", Kendare Blake has penned a piece based on "Metzengerstein" in which the only living heir of a fortune enjoys a dalliance with a supposed maid that leads to tragedy, and in "It's Carnival!" based on "The Cask of Amontillado", Tiffany D. Jackson sets the story at a Jamaican festival in New Orleans. Some of the titles are stronger pieces of writing than others, but fans of Poe are sure to enjoy experiencing these adaptations re-imagined with new settings and diverse characters.
