Justyce McAllister is at the top of his class at an elite private school, hoping to be accepted to an ivy league college, and trying to follow in Dr. Martin Luther King's footsteps, so much so that he starts a journal, writing to Dr. King about his experiences. He believes peace is the answer, but when he's arrested and accused of doing something he didn't do and his best friend and he are shot at by a white guy for playing their music loudly, he's tempted to join a group that not only believes that peace isn't the answer to the racial issues plaguing the U.S., but which also engages in illegal activities. Both an exploration of race relations and a cautionary tale, the novel Dear Martin is an excellent starting point for discussions on race, class, and the judicial system.
