Samira struggles with her immigrant mother's conservative ways. Her mother is protective, and as rumors go around about Samira's wearing revealing clothing and make-up, Samira's mother becomes even more restrictive, hardly allowing Samira to leave the house at all. However, she doesn't protect her from the Internet, and this is where Samira meets Horus, a 25-year-old man who shares her love of poetry. Samira who is enrolled in a poetry program and is a gifted slam poet, is enthralled by Horus' mastery of verse as well as the compliments he pays her, but she soon begins to wonder if she can trust this man she hardly knows and if her secret relationship with Horus could irreparably damage the tenous relationshp she has with her mother. Bright Red Fruit by Safia Elhillo is aptly written as a verse novel and is an excellent read for those who enjoy poetry or stories about relationships.
