After Matt's spring break plans with his father don't work out (due to the young woman his dad left his mom for), he goes with his friend Tony to Colorado to ski. However, Tony's older brother, Sid, and his college friends decide to go cross country skiing out-of-bounds in the back country where the snow is fresh and unsullied by other skiiers. Unfortunately, they are caught in an avalanche and the group struggles to survive in the harsh wilderness, facing dangerous weather conditions and wild animals. At the same time, one person becomes lost in the avalanche and one other is seriously injured. It's up to Matt and Leah to go get help before it's too late. Avalanche, by Melinda Braun, is a short, fast-paced survival novel with plenty of action that is appropriate for older teens.
