Yes, I know Dune was published decades ago but, despite impassioned pleas from my sister to read it when I was a teenager, I never did...until now. Fortunately, even though science fiction is not one of my favorite genres, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The characters are well-developed, making them easy to root for such as Paul Leto or despise; the Harkonnen baron is especially evil. There's also plenty of intrigue as the Baron plots with the emperor to assassinate Duke Leto, and the Bene Gesserit, a sect of mystical women with certain powers attempt to control others and exert their influence. Dune is not only original but replete with the kind of details and imagery that science fiction fans hunger for. By the end of the book, readers will feel that they have lived and fought on the desert planet of Arrakis themselves. This is a must read for fans of sci fi or those considering seeing the movie!
